Cultural Center in Birštonas
(Survived
)

In the 70s, the Soviet architecture turned towards more expressive aesthetics in within a modernist framework. Lithuanian cities had an increasing number of complex layouts, irrational buildings. Probably the best environment for such experiments was culture centers which, at least in the case of smaller settlements, used to become the new centre of the city or the town. However, designed according to the 1973 draft of architect Antanaitienė, Birštonas culture centre had transitional aesthetics. Its fairly rational and clear shape provides evidence of a purist, albeit slightly too ascetic architecture. However, its hall is already shaped as a trapezium, thus showing the trend of searching for new shapes in the architecture of that time.
