Sanatorium “Tulpė” of Kaišiadorys Diocese Priests

<p style="text-align: justify;">Without a doubt the most famous inter-war Lithuanian architect Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis left his trace in Birštonas as well. Today, Sanatorium “Tulpė” of Kaišiadorys Diocese Priests designed in 1937 is considered one of the most important examples of inter-war masonry architect in the resort. Building's architecture was clearly influenced by architect's studies in Roma: its oblong shape and the use of a low four-slope roof, a massive cornice, and loggias is a replica of Italian villas.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Although in the 30s V. Landsbergis-Žemkalnis created may great examples of Lithuanian modernism, his project would often combine modern ideas with unique use of classical forms, as evidenced by “Tulpė”. It should be noted that the architect would often use such style in designing buildings related to Catholic church and also in order to emphasize the conservative attitude towards architecture at that time. Following the Soviet occupation, the building was nationalized and returned to its original owners in 1991.</p>
