Kaunas St. Gertrude Church was constructed in a number of stages. During the first stage, in the 15th century the main single nave church building of square shaped plan with a virtually square presbytery, finishing with an almost symmetrical three-walled apse was constructed. At the second stage, in the 16th century, a sacristy annex was constructed on the northern side of the sacristy, and a four level tower of square shaped plan was constructed next to the western façade. The primary architecture of the Gothic church interior and exterior remained unchanged until the end of the 18th century. During the renovation of 1794, three stone altars, choir stall and a stone pulpit were constructed and the cellar was fitted out. St. Gertrude church is one of only a few stone churches in Lithuania with wooden ceiling joists.
