Typical funeral home
(Survived
)

Among the most unique examples of architecture in Soviet Lithuania - a repetitive project of funeral parlors "šermeninės" (literally - a place where a wake is held) (this is how the objects officially named "the parlors of ritual services" were called by the architect Gytis Tiškus) in Klaipėda, Panevėžys and Šiauliai. The building consists of two main volumes - vertical and horizontal. A one-floor part of the building is an ordinary structure of late Soviet modernism without any peculiar features. However, a tall and particularly steep roof volume embedded in the horizontal body essentially changes the architectural expression of the building and renders an aesthetical and symbolic load. The architect sought to inspire a sacred dimension to the building, designing a space of considerable height like a certain cemetery chapel. The interior is rather simple; stained-glass creating a wake-specific aura is used for the décor. A sun-cross is adjusted between the main volumes. It is a decorative, as well as symbolic, highlight linking the building with the memorial tradition of folk art. In fact, if the idea had been approved, G. Tiškus would have also used a cross in the composition; however, as the architect explained afterwards, "a cross was not allowed at that time, it was a taboo". The sun-cross was designed for each building individually.
